Past a few months I’ve been experimenting with a few toners. In the past I’ve tried a several brands, especially Clariol Professional products. I always have liked their Creme Toners, but lately, I’ve been enraptured with Wella Color Charm Toners. Every time I use one of their toners, they always make my hair and scalp feel good without a bit of sting like with most permanent colors. Permanent colors tend to sting freshly lightened or highlighted hair because of higher content of peroxide and ammonia, but Wella Color Charm Toners don’t really sting my scalp and the color always turns out exactly what the swatch shows and the nice fact they’re considered medium hazard regarding health well being. I’ve been gradually going blonder, and I wanted something that isn’t quite platinum blonde (too bright for me) yet pale enough. Right now I’m in love with Wella Color Charm T10, known as Ivory Lady. It’s a pure, lovely soft pale blonde that’s not too yellowish or beige-y. It does look like a polished ivory. I’m totally enthralled with the results. I’ve used this toner a few times and the color has come out successfully. It looks great with my summer tan. However, at first, it may look a little dark/dull but will go away in a few shampoos, and then the color will turn out and look like a pure pale blonde. I’m totally loyal to Wella toners now, and I thought about trying Wella toner labeled T18 or known as ‘White Lady’, but I think it’s a little too white for me. I’m not ready to be a white blonde. But it might be next on my list to try.

Oh no, I don’t think it’s a good idea to use Ivory Lady on your hair because it’s orange and pinkish. Your hair is not light enough to use this color. This color is designed for hair that has been successfully lightened to a level 10 which is similar to inside the banana peel but may can get away with just light banana yellow hair, a level 9 as long as there’s very few orange and gold tones. You have two choices here: go to a hair salon to have your hair color fixed because you had three different colors in your hair and would have to undergo hair color stripper/removal first before bleaching with a risk of hair damage OR dye your hair a darker blonde/light brown because there’s no way you can be as light as you’d like to go without seeing a photo of your hair first and it takes time to go lighter without severe damage. Do not touch your roots! They’re too light than the rest of your hair. The thumb of the rule is that never do your roots until very last part of hair coloring process.

Yes, the toner will fade after several clarifying shampoos. After it fades, the medium blonde may be revealed and become a bit lighter. Hopefully that’s the case for you! It’s tricky to get the shade you had in mind because the swatches you see on the shelf may not be the same one on your hair because of previous dyed colors, which will affect the end results. Keep it in mind. The shades usually work on hair that’s never has been dyed or minimal coloring (same color after years and years). Hence, chemicals can be tricky! It doesn’t matter what kind of shampoo you use because all shampoos will eventually fade your color but the strongest of them all is either the clarifying shampoo or bleach soap cap. Bleach soap cap is what some hairdressers use to remove unwanted tones. 1 ounce developer 10-40 volume, 1 ounce clarifying or chelating shampoo and 1 ounce warm water apply to wet/damp hair. The bleach will lighten and sensitize 1 to 2 levels of pigment. Usually it will lighten or chip off overly dark or unwanted tones. This method isn’t as aggressive as a full on color remover, but is great for removing an unwanted tone or lightening a touch if color went too dark. Best wishes!

Hi there, these comments are so helpful! I decided I wanted to go for a dark ashy blond shade, so I dyed my virgin light brown hair with a box dye (ugh) hoping it would lighten it to something of my liking, but the result was a dark orange-ish shade. The top of my hair was somewhat brighter than the hair underneath. So after that I decided to use Color Oops, thinking it would lift or take out some of the orange. (Was that a bad idea?) It came out verrrry bright yellow/orange, but it’s still not what I want!

I went to Sally’s Beauty Supply and picked up the Ivory Lady T10 toner and 20 vol developer. Should I use that in about a week or so? Do you think it would take out the orange color? My hair now isn’t very damaged, but I did notice a slight difference after using the Color Oops.

Thank you so much!!! I really hope you can help me.

What happened was that your hair didn’t lighten sufficiently, hence, the orange-ish color. What did you use to dye your hair? Ivory Lady toner will not achieve on anything that’s darker than a lightened pale blonde hair and the orange-ish parts will still show up.

I have fine, medium brown hair I guess a level 4 or 5 I’ve been told and I have successfully lightened my hair to a platinum white blonde by myself using clairol and wella products. In addition I’ve done it in a way that has kept my hair healthy enough that it looks natural and has now grown to the middle of my back. I’ll tell you how I’ve done it maybe it will be helpful. When I first went blonde from brown my hair was down passed the middle of my back. I knew I wanted to use clairol products from sallys not the boxed kits from target or other places. Fortunately the manager at Sallys near my house is a licensed hair dresser and was helpful. Even so at first my hair didnt take it was to dark and long. In the end what worked for me was clairol 12 a color with a 40 vol and shampoo and 3 2oz packets of a powder called LIGHTENING ACTIVATERS. These packets are white and have pink stripes at the top. My roots wont even lighten without the lightening activators, my hair will become dark orange and 2 packets wont work I have to use three. Becouse of the length of my hair I used 4oz of 12a clairol color 4oz of 40 vol dev 3oz of shampoo and 3 packets of lightening activators. If your hair is really long and a med brown or darker apply to bottom of hair leaving the top 3 inches dry and untouched, leave on for 40 min. Prepare a new batch this time 2oz of color 2oz of dev 1 in a half of shampoo and 3 packets of activators. apply to roots leave on for 30 min. If your hair is dark its not fried and can take it. If its really dark it might have some orange in it but a white lady toner will help. DONT FORGET THE LIGHTENING ACTIVATORS If you have dark hair its the only way it will lighten without leaving it orange. Now that I have reached desired color I ONLY have to bleach my roots when I color using the above mixture. I leave it on for 40 min and its light enough. My hair is light enough to deposit color so instead of a toner I use wellas 1120 nordic blonde all over with a 20volume after I do my roots.

Okay- Beauty school drop out here…. Natural is a light 8 I pull warm with ALL haircolor, Yes I have tried it all! Goldwell, Paul Mitchell, Bed head, joico, etc etc….. I have used T18 toner for a very long time, for some reason my body’s chemical has changed and it doesnt look good on me anymore. So I purchased “old trusty” and T27 …. I lightened my roots, and toned with 10 vol 2 parts and T27 whole bottle (thick hair) for 5 minutes, look for a pinkish, gold color. Turned out great!

Hi there. That’s awesome you got some help at Sally’s and achieved the pretty color yourself using lightening activators. If you received professional advice without damaging your hair, the kudos to you. However, there’s no shortcuts in achieving pale blonde hair which is still the ol’ double process for those ladies with super dark to brown hair. Enjoy your new color while maintaining long hair you got there.

I’m glad it worked out for you! Enjoy your new color. =)

Thx for the blog! Couple questions: what volume developer did u use? The wella box says 20 but the girl at sallys said 10. Also, did u bleach ur hair beforehand, then tone? And how long did u keep the toner in?
    Thx!

  • http://www.fauxblondes.com Amy

I used 20 volume but 10 volume is more gentler and create more deposit than 20 volume. If you have some brassiness and don’t want to further damage your hair, go with 10. I hope that helped.

I want to tone my hair which is a light yellow/ ash blonde and light yellow/white at my roots, do I have to use wella ivory or white lady? or can I use the wella ultra light blonde and take the yellow out with that? as I absolutely love the color example of the ultra light blonde?

  • Anonymous

It depends on the end result do you want? Do you want to be a white gold or a white platinum blonde? Ivory Lady is more of a white gold (white blonde) while White Lady is more of a platinum blonde (more cooler than Ivory Lady). Ultra Light Blonde has a neutral base and is considered a high lift color. I’d recommend you to either use Ivory or White Lady if you have bleached your hair because they are toners, designed for pre-bleached hair.

Hi Amy, I used the wella white lady toner last night for 7 minutes (even though the girl from sallys said 10) on my bleached hair. I have normally light blonde hair, but took the next step. And the wella turned strands of my hair grey, so I freaked out and googled stuff, then I came across your website, and bought some clarifying shampoo, now the grey is gone, however my hair is white… I feel like and ice princess, and … not in a good way. Help?

  • TovvH3ad

Great info on here, thanks everyone! I’ve been using Clairol Professional Creme Toners for YEARS before they were discontinued. :~( I’m hearing great things about Wella toners, and on here Ivory Lady and White Lady seem to reign supreme. I’m used to mixing equal parts Platinum Beige (Blue base) and Extra Light Platinum (Violet) to get the perfect platinum. I’m thinking of mixing Ivory Lady and White Lady — has anyone tried this?

  • Amy

Sorry for the late reply. First of all, you did follow basic instructions of removing the black and bleaching the hair. Unfortunately, to go platinum from black or even orangey hair is difficult. Time and patience is the key in order to achieve platinum blonde color without your hair breaking off. If you are unable to do it yourself due to inadequate products or stubborn hair color removal, may I suggest you to see a hair colorist to find a solution and safely bring up your hair to the shade you desire but it may not be the first color you seek. Best wishes on your blonding journey!

  • Amy

Hi there…you can mix both using 1/2 ratio for each bottle. I bet the result would be pretty. Have fun!

  • Mallia

Amy, thank you for putting my mind at ease about Ivory Lady. I used it yesterday & it took my hair from a level 9 to what looks like a level 6-7 ashy blonde everywhere it was applied. It did get rid of most of my orange. Since I only applied it to my roots (that’s where I’m orange), it looks like some botched ombre job! lol

But because of your blog and all your helpful advice here, now I’m confident it’ll wash out after a few clarifying shampoos, and leave me with just the balance I was looking for.

  • Cathrine A.

Hi! I bleached my hair yesterday, and today I toned it to get rid of the yellow/orange in it. What should I do next to get to the platinum hair? It’s more ash-blonde now :)

  • Laura99

wow… haven’t any of you heard of a licensed professional. There’s a reason you shouldn’t do this at home.

  • Jovany_p17

dont bleach anymore, and t18 would be great for you right now. use it with 20 vol developer and leave it for about 30 minutes, but don’t condition you hair right before the application otherwise the color won’t take. so if you condition today do it tomorrow. and use purple shampoo if some of that yellow still remains. leave the purple shampoo on for like 20-40 minutes and it works wonders. if you leave it on longer than an hour your hair might have a purple sheen so just wash it twice when you rinse it out and condition,

  • Amy

I understand your sentiment. However, I had really bad experiences with former hairdressers so I took this into my own hands AFTER lots of research and trial. But normally I would recommend anyone to see a hairdresser if they don’t know what they’re doing and to avoid any damage to their hair. I never had an issue doing this on my own. Now, I see a hairdresser to do my hair to save my time. Thanks for your comment.
